On Wednesday, May 18th, instructor Barbara Henning will read from Ferne: A Detroit Story with The Brooklyn Rail. Barbara’s reading will include a conversation with other poets, and will be conducted over Zoom.
Pauline Chow Publishes in 50 Word Stories and Chamber Magazine
Congratulations to Pauline Chow, who had two pieces published this week. “Cutting Expectations” was published in 50 Word Stories, and “Office Friends” was published in Chamber Magazine. Pauline wrote these pieces alongside Giulietta Nardone in her course Let It Rip.
Paul Kimm Publishes Two Short Stories
Congratulations to Paul Kimm, who had two stories published in different journals this week. “Saturday Omelettes” was published in Literally Stories, and “Kiss Me Quick” was published in Northern Gravy. Both of these stories were written alongside Jack Smith in his course Writing Autobiographical Fiction.

Lyzette Wanzer’s Upcoming Memoir Listed as “2022 Top Shelf Pick” by IPG
Congratulations to instructor Lyzette Wanzer, whose forthcoming memoir Trauma, Tresses, & Truth: Untangling Our Hair Through Personal Narrative was listed as a Top-Shelf Pick by Independent Publishers Group (IPG). Lyzette’s manuscript will receive additional marketing efforts and high profile magazine features as it approaches publication in the fall.

UK-based Guts Publishing is seeking memoirs, autobiographies, autobiographical fiction, and other creative nonfiction work. Their preferences include work about art, music, travel, and cyber life, but all topics are welcome. Emerging and experimental writers are encouraged to apply.
Aestas Short Story Contest 2021

Pensive: A Global Journal of Spirituality and the Arts seeks spiritual fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for their biannual publication. Based out of Northeastern University, Pensive seeks to broaden its readers’ understanding of the human spirit: its depth, endlessness, and timeless relationship to the arts. Open for Submissions: Moxy Magazine
Moxy Magazine is currently open for submissions. The journal seeks content related to creative nonfiction, including personal essays, critical theory, and travel writing. All submissions must conform to standard British English, and submissions will be reviewed within 3-4 weeks. Take a look at this great CNF project in the U.K.!
Project Grants for BIPOC Writers – Poets & Writers
Poets & Writers is offering grants to writers living in Detroit, Houston, or New Orleans. Writers must be black, indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC) and have a writing project that requires external funding. These grants will primarily support online literary events and communities; see more details at their website. Applications are due September 30th!
Short Story Competition – Something Or Other Publishing
Something Or Other Publishing has just announced their first annual short story contest. Writers can submit works of flash fiction, literary fiction, or nonfiction in 25 different categories, and all submitted works will be reviewed by both guest judges and public readers.
